Investigation of Drying Shrinkage Characteristics in Lightweight Engineered Cementitious Composites

Lightweight engineered cementitious composites (LW-ECCs) not only offer comparable mechanical strengths compared with conventional concrete, but also increase the tensile strain of the composite and exhibit strain-hardening behavior, and can be utilized in weight-critical structures such as buildings in seismically active areas. Hollow glass microsphere is a type of ultra-lightweight inorganic non-metallic hollow sphere and it has been deemed as one of the potential sustainable fillers of cement composites. This study aims to investigate the drying shrinkage behavior of LW-ECCs mix designs incorporating different types of hollow glass microspheres (HGMs). Eight types of HGMs with different densities (0.2–0.6 g/cm3) and particle size distributions were incorporated to replace fly ash at 80 and 100 vol% with HGMs. Drying shrinkage was measured from the age of 2 days and up to 91 days. The results demonstrate that all LW-ECCs at 91 days showed greater shrinkage than the control mix, deformation ranged from 1140–1877 µε; 80% replacement ratio of HGMs was regarded as the optimum due to less shrinkage than 100% HGM mixes; the mix incorporating 80% H60 type of HGMs was the relatively most desired mix which had the least shrinkage at 91 days compared to other LW-ECCs, and the strains of the mix using H60 were 1140 and 1385 µε at 91 days for 80% and 100% replacement, respectively.

Reinforced ECC-UHPC-SCC composite modular framed shear wall systems under lateral cyclic loading

The shear strength and deformability of high performance reinforced composite framed shear wall systems made of Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC), Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) and Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) subjected to lateral cyclic shear loading to failure were investigated. A total of seven framed shear wall specimens were constructed using combinations of ECC or SCC wall, SCC frame and ECC or UHPC frame joints. The performance of such novel modular forms of walling systems were compared based on experimental results in terms of cracking, failure mode, hysteretic shear load-deformation response, shear load capacity, ductility, bearing capacity degradation, stiffness degradation, dissipated energy, viscous damping capacity, induced wall shear stresses and strain development characteristics. ECC walling system exhibited better structural performance compared to their SCC counterparts showing up to 40% higher load capacity forming significantly higher number of closely spaced diagonal cracks with up to 72% lower crack shear stress, 14% to 21% higher ductility, up to 2 times higher energy dissipation capacity and lower rate of stiffness/bearing capacity degradation through both hysteretic and damping actions. The incorporation of ECC and ECC or UHPC joint in frame significantly improved shear strength capacity of infill wall and overall framed shear wall system. ECC incorporated framed shear walls even with frames made of SCC and UHPC joints also exhibited superior performance. This study confirmed the superior performance of ECC material for the construction of reinforced framed shear wall with boundary frame made of ECC/SCC/UHPC combinations for better seismic resistance.

Mechanical behavior of ECC-reinforced coupled shear wall

PurposeBased on the weak seismic performance and low ductility of coupled shear walls, engineered cementitious composites (ECC) is utilized to strengthen it to solve the deformation problem in tall buildings more effectively and study its mechanical properties more deeply.Design/methodology/approachThe properties of reinforced concrete coupled shear wall (RCCSW) and reinforced ECC coupled shear wall (RECSW) have been studied by numerical simulation, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. The reliability of the finite element model is verified. On this basis, a detailed parameter study is carried out, including the strength and reinforcement ratio of longitudinal rebar, the placement height of ECC in the wall limb and the position of ECC connecting beams. The study indexes include failure mode and the skeleton curve.FindingsThe results suggest that the bearing capacity of RECSW is significantly affected by the ratio of longitudinal rebar. When the ratio of longitudinal rebar increases from 0.47% to 3.35%, the bearing capacity of RECSW increases from 250 kN to 303 kN, an increase of 21%. The strength of longitudinal rebar has little influence on the bearing capacity of RECSW. When the strength of the longitudinal rebar increases, the bearing capacity of RECSW increases little. The failure mode of RECSW can be improved by lowering the casting height of the ECC beam in a certain range.Originality/valueIn this paper, ECC is used to strengthen the coupled shear wall, and the accuracy of the finite element model is verified from the failure mode and skeleton curve. On this basis, the casting height of the ECC casting wall limb, the strength and reinforcement ratio of longitudinal rebar and the position of the ECC beam are studied in detail.

Investigation on mechanical behavior of engineered cementitious composites incorporating alkali‐resistant glass fiber and quarry dust

AbstractAt present, engineered cementitious composites (ECC) are rapidly replacing ordinary concrete in the building production due to its superior durability and mechanical qualities. Enormous researches have been done on ECC incorporating various fibers, industrial wastes, supplementary cementitious materials and super plasticizers. As far as fiber is concerned, poly vinyl alcohol fiber was widely explored. In this study, attempt has been made to involve alkali resistant glass fiber as a replacement for poly vinyl alcohol fiber. In addition, the high rate related with ECC as a result of the utilization of micro‐sized silica sand has restricted its extensive pertinences. Thus, this study recommends utilization of quarry dust to replace fine silica sand in the ECC at amounts ranging from 0% to 100% in order to establish a green, sustainable and cost‐effective ECC. The flowability and mechanical demeanor of the ECC mixtures in terms of the tensile, compressive and flexural properties were evaluated. It is arrived that 2% of volume fraction would be the optimum dosage by which better mechanical properties can be achieved. As a result of the present research findings, it is found that the quarry dust could be a better substitute for silica sand up to 75% without any compromise in compressive and flexural strengths. To attain higher tensile qualities, however, it might not be appropriate to replace more than 50% of the silica sand with quarry dust. Cost analysis of the ECC mixtures show that using quarry dust as aggregate is both cost‐effective and sustainable.

Sulphate resistance of low-clinker engineered cementitious composites examined by MicroXRF imaging.

Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) are a class of high-performing fibre-reinforced cementitious materials recognised for their increased ductility and durability compared to conventional cement-based materials, owing to their autogenously controlled tight crack widths, even when subjected to high strains. To reduce ECC's environmental impact, this research examines the use of a low-clinker binder - limestone-calcined clay cement (LC3) - as an alternative to portland cement (PC), along with fly ash to further reduce the clinker proportion and the embodied CO2 of the formulations. In conventional concrete, LC3 hydrates to a denser microstructure resulting from the synergistic reaction between limestone and calcined clay. At the lower water contents typical of ECC and with the presence of fly ash, the influence of the binder composition on the microstructure is difficult to anticipate. To examine the influence of these compositional variables on microstructure, permeability and durability, the sulphate resistance of LC3-based ECC is explored. Specifically, the ECC-LC3 blends are designed with high clinker replacement rate of 75% by mass of binder and contain either conventional fly ash or reclaimed fly ash at 50% by mass of binder. Expansion of ECC-LC3 samples subjected to standard sodium sulphate test conditions was measured up to 12 months and the depth of penetration of sulphates into the ECC-LC3 of varying compositions was quantified using micro-X-Ray Fluorescence (microXRF) imaging and modelling. The expansion results show that the ECC-LC3 formulations performed better than the PC samples and can provide adequate resistance to external sulphate attack, even when reclaimed fly ashes are used in place of the conventional ash. In addition, the shallow penetration of sulphate into these cementitious composites demonstrates the low diffusion coefficients values that were determined using the quantitative data from MicroXRF imaging.

Flexural behavior of RC beams reinforced by ECC layer and steel plate: numerical simulation

PurposeThe combination of an Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) layer and steel plate to reinforce RC beams (ESRB) is a new strengthening method. The ESRB was proposed based on the steel plate at the bottom of RC beams, aiming to solve the problem of over-reinforced RC beams and improve the bearing capacity of RC beams without affecting their ductility.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, the finite element model of ESRB was established by ABAQUS. The results were compared with the experimental results of ESRB in previous studies and the reliability of the finite element model was verified. On this basis, parameters such as the width of the steel plate, thickness of the ECC layer, damage degree of the original beam and cross-sectional area of longitudinal tensile rebar were analyzed by the verified finite element model. Based on the load–deflection curve of ESRB, ESRB was discussed in terms of ultimate bearing capacity and ductility.FindingsThe results demonstrate that when the width of the steel plate increases, the ultimate load of ESRB increases to 133.22 kN by 11.58% as well as the ductility index increases to 2.39. With the increase of the damage degree of the original beam, the ultimate load of ESRB decreases by 23.7%–91.09 kN and the ductility index decreases to 1.90. With the enhancement of the cross-sectional area of longitudinal tensile rebar, the ultimate bearing capacity of ESRB increases to 126.75 kN by 6.2% and the ductility index elevates to 2.30. Finally, a calculation model for predicting the flexural capacity of ESRB is proposed. The calculated results of the model are in line with the experimental results.Originality/valueBased on the comparative analysis of the test results and numerical simulation results of 11 test beams, this investigation verified the accuracy and reliability of the finite element simulation from the aspects of load–deflection curve, characteristic load and failure mode. Furthermore, based on load–deflection curve, the effects of steel plate width, ECC layer thickness, damage degree of the original beam and cross-sectional area of longitudinal tensile rebar on the ultimate bearing capacity and ductility of ESRB were discussed. Finally, a simplified method was put forward to further verify the effectiveness of ESRB through analytical calculation.

Structural Behavior of Precast Monolithic Composite Beams with ECC Prefabricated Shells

Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) was used in the prefabricated shell of a precast composite beam, and the validity of the ECC in the precast monolithic composite beam’s flexural performance was studied. Flexural performance tests were conducted on six specimens to analyze their failure state, failure mechanism, bearing capacity, and deformation capacity. Compared with the Reinforced Concrete (RC) prefabricated shell composite beam, the ECC prefabricated shell composite beam showed a higher bearing capacity and lower damage degree. The yielding load of specimen PSMCB−1 increased by 5.6%. The maximum load of specimen PSMCB−1 reached 256.6 kN, having increased by 8.1%. When the tests stopped, the maximum crack width of specimen PSMCB−1 was 4.1mm, while the maximum crack width of specimen PSMCB−6 reached 9.0 mm. The ECC material in the prefabricated shell also delayed the yielding of the steel bars in the shell.

Chatting about ChatGPT: How does ChatGPT 4.0 perform on the understanding and design of cementitious composite?

Over the past year, ChatGPT's initial applications across diverse fields have progressed amid debates on its ethical implications and inherent biases. This paper investigates the comprehension level of ChatGPT 4.0 regarding cementitious composites and initiates preliminary research into its application in cementitious composites，including ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete, Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC), and Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC). Initially, the study designed forty-five progressively challenging questions to examine the readability and accuracy of ChatGPT's responses related to cementitious composites. Building on this, the research explored the feasibility of utilizing ChatGPT for the identification and analysis of ECC cracks, the design of mix proportions for cementitious composites, and the real-time analysis of carbon emissions. The results demonstrate ChatGPT 4.0’s proficiency in acquiring foundational knowledge of cementitious composites, a capability verified through interactive human-computer modalities for analysing crack quantity and width, formulating preliminary material compositions, and providing instantaneous feedback on carbon emissions. However, the study also uncovers ChatGPT 4.0’s limitations in understanding the complex design mathematics and mechanics underlying cementitious composites, as well as its inadequate ability to synthesise and integrate interdisciplinary knowledge, occasionally leading to arbitrary and forced responses. These findings underscore the need for further enhancements in algorithmic sophistication and database comprehensiveness. The paper concludes by projecting the future applicability of ChatGPT in the cementitious composites sector, highlighting its initial contributions while delineating avenues for subsequent research and development.

A comparative study on the seismic performance of long span Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) structures

The strain hardening fiber reinforced concrete—generally known as the Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC)—has rapidly gained the attention of researchers in recent years. However, most of the research on ECC is limited to material and member level, leaving a gap in the understanding of its behavior at the structural scale. Therefore, this study investigates the global seismic response of ECC structures and compares their performance with conventional reinforced concrete (RC) structures. For this purpose, a case study long span building structure (an aircraft hangar having a span length of 40 meters) is selected. Under the design-level gravity and lateral loads, its members are separately designed using the conventional RC and ECC. It is observed that for ECC members, the requirement of longitudinal steel is reduced by 30% when compared with the conventional RC members. Similarly, owing to an improved tensile behavior, the ECC members also exhibited a higher shear capacity than RC members, resulting in a significant reduction in the requirement of transverse reinforcement. The detailed inelastic finite element models for both design cases (RC and ECC) were subjected to the pushover analysis and nonlinear response history analysis (NLRHA) to assess their seismic performance. It is observed that (in terms of local and global seismic demands, structural damage, and ductile behavior) the performance of the ECC structure is significantly improved when compared to the conventional RC structure. The comparative cost analysis showed a reduction of 11.9% in the overall material cost of the ECC structure as compared to RC. These results show that ECC can be effectively used at the full structural level as an economic solution to ensure the ductile response and superior seismic performance.

Development of low-cost engineered cementitious composites using Yellow River silt and unoiled PVA fiber

One of the main problems for restricting the extensive practical application of Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) is its expensive price due to the incorporation of high-price fine quartz sand and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers. To address this defect, the replacement with solid waste fine aggregate and locally produced PVA fiber has been proved to be a good choice. This work aims to develop low-cost green ECC using Yellow River silt as fine aggregate and locally produced unoiled PVA fiber. The effects of water-binder ratio, sand-binder ratio, and PVA fiber content on the mechanical characteristics of as-prepared ECC were evaluated by a comparative experiment. It has been indicated that the mechanical characteristics of as-prepared low-cost ECC are significantly affected by water-binder ratio, sand-binder ratio, and PVA fiber content. As the water-binder ratio rises, the tensile ductility of as-prepared low-cost ECC gradually increases, but the tensile strength, compressive strength, and flexural strength all decrease. The compressive strength and flexural strength exhibit a positive correlation with the sand-binder ratio, albeit with a minimal impact. Too low or high sand-binder ratio leads to a decrease in strain-hardening ability. Moreover, the as-prepared ECC exhibits a comparatively reduced tensile strain capacity when using locally produced unoiled PVA fiber as opposed to imported oiled PVA fiber. Finally, the environmental impact and economic benefits of the as-prepared low-cost ECC and Typical ECC are compared. The as-prepared low-cost ECC has good strain-hardening ability and low cost, indicating a potential application in real engineering.

Performance of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) in shield tunnel segmental joints: A comparative study with ordinary reinforced concrete

Shield tunnel segmental joints are traditionally vulnerable, limited by their tensile capacity and susceptibility to cracking. Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) offer a promising solution due to their superior tensile strength, exceptional crack resistance, and remarkable toughness. However, the application of ECC in tunnel segment joints remains unexplored. To address this gap, this paper conducted comprehensive full-scale tests of ECC segmental joints versus ordinary reinforced concrete (RC) segmental joints. It investigated mechanical responses including material behavior, deflection, joint action, bolt strain, crack development, and failure modes. Results revealed that: (1) ECC joints provided a 33.97% higher stable bearing capacity and a 50% increase in initial cracking strength compared to RC joints. (2) ECC joints excelled in crack control, maintaining crack widths below 0.2mm, while RC joints experienced significant cracking with widths exceeding 1mm. (3) In terms of toughness, ECC joints surpassed RC by 66% in the elastic stage and 123% in the normal serviceability stage, with 96% higher ductility. (4) ECC joints significantly outperformed RC joints in bolt stress uniformity and concentration, achieving a 43.21% reduction in average bolt stress. (5) Regarding multi-scale mechanical effects, ECC joints increased the toughness and strength advantage over RC by more than 45% in the elastic phase. These results reveal the potential of ECC in significantly enhancing the durability and resilience of shield tunnels, particularly in harsh environments subjected to high ground stress or seismic activities.

Cyclic behavior of existing RC bridge piers strengthened by exterior ECC and BFRP/ECC composite jacketing at pier base

Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) are a class of high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites. This study proposes using ECC and BFRP grid-reinforced ECC (BFRP/ECC) as external jackets at the base of existing RC bridge piers to enhance seismic performance. Seven 1/5-scale RC bridge piers were tested under reversed cyclic loading, including one unmodified pier as reference and six reinforced piers with varying jacket thickness, height, interface, and BFRP grid mesh size. The test results demonstrate that both ECC and BFRP/ECC composite jacketing effectively enhance ductility. The hysteretic response of the reinforced piers with different interfacial properties, however, varied significantly. The piers with interfacial shear keys exhibited enhanced flexural strength, ductility, and energy dissipation capacity but sustained severe damage as jacketing thickness and height increased. Conversely, the piers with smooth interfaces showed insignificant improvements in flexural strength but significant enhancement in ductility with marginal damage. This behavior can be attributed to the fact that the exterior jacketing in specimens with interfacial shear keys was under bi-axial tension-compression stress state due to flexural compression and lateral expansion of the plastic hinge, while the jacket in specimens with smooth interfaces acted solely as lateral confinement.

Development of sustainable engineered cementitious composite with enhanced compressive performance at elevated temperatures using high volume GGBFS

This study presents the development of an environmentally sustainable hybrid polyethylene (PE)-steel fibre reinforced engineered cementitious composites (ECC) to achieve enhanced compressive behaviour at elevated temperature. Utilizing a unique blend of industry by-products—ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), dolomite powder, and fly ash, with supplementary cementitious materials exceeding 50% replacement level, the developed ECC achieves remarkable improvement in compressive strength, both at ambient and elevated temperature conditions. A total of 340-cylinder specimens were tested to analyse the compressive properties after exposure to 20–800 °C, and the effect of different binders, fibre ratio on the residual compressive behaviour was investigated. Additionally, effects of the critical fire test parameters such as pre-drying and cooling treatment were also studied. The research findings indicate that incorporating high-volume GGBFS blends significantly improved the compressive performance of the ECC irrespective of the type of test parameters. Notably, a specific blend comprising of GGBFS, fly ash (GGBFS:fly ash = 1:0.2) and dolomite (15% by binder weight) demonstrated 138 MPa strength at room temperature and at least 75% and 45% strength retention at 600 °C and 800 °C, respectively. This was significantly higher than the values reported in literatures (∼48% at 600 °C and ∼12% at 800 °C) for similar type of ECC. The study also highlights the impact of sudden cooling in water and confirms the occurrence of both thermal shock and rehydration through microstructural analysis. Environmental impact analysis was also conducted to demonstrate the low carbon emission of the developed ECC.

Torsional strength design method and cost analysis of FRP bars reinforced ECC beams without stirrups

Fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) bars reinforced engineered cementitious composites (ECC) beams without stirrups own excellent torsional performance and good application prospect. However, the corresponding torsional strength design method is not available. In order to predict the torsional strength of the ECC beams, a theoretical design method is established in this research. The proposed design method is based on the variable-angle space truss (VAST) model, and the tensile resistance supplied by fibers is carefully considered. The established design method is verified through the experimental results. It can be found that the predicted values agree well with the experimental values. A parametric analysis is carried out. Ultimate torque (i.e., torsional strength) increases significantly with the increment of ECC strength grade or longitudinal reinforcement ratio. However, at the same cross-section area, ultimate torque decreases slightly with the increment of height/width ratio. In addition, the cost effectiveness of the ECC beams without stirrups is discussed. Compared with mortar beam with a stirrup reinforcement ratio of 0.7%, FRP bars reinforced ECC beams without stirrups have small cost/ultimate torque ratio (a reduction ratio of 39.14%–60.86%), indicating that the ECC beams without stirrups own satisfactory cost effectiveness. This study will provide a torsional strength design guideline for FRP bars reinforced ECC beams without stirrups.

A multiscale thermo-mechanical coupling model for Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composite (FRCC)

This paper aims to develop a multiscale thermo-mechanical coupling model across from meso-scale to macro-scale to study the tensile thermos-mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (FRCC) on the base of thermodynamics. In meso-scale, the coupling process of thermal effect and the development law of a single crack were creatively presented and formulated in energy potential function. The effects of fiber dispersion on cracking behavior and crack strength of matrix were determined. In macro-scale, the multiple-fine-cracks and strain-hardening/softening behavior under tension were defined and studied. The bridging action stress of fibers is calculated by considering the bonding stress in the interface transition zone (ITZ). The model can be upgraded for FRCC materials ranges from strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC) and engineered cementitious composite (ECC). The numerical calculations of the proposed model were conducted based on the Fortran program for validation. The residual tensile strength, multiple-fine-cracks and strain-hardening/softening behaviors of FRCC were predicted. The behaviors of FRCC with different fiber types were accurately captured in a range of temperature from 20°C to 600°C through the comparative study with six groups test results in literatures. A sensibility study was carried out to analyze the impact of modelling parameters and thermal effect on the strain-hardening/softening behaviors of FRCC.

Research on Optimization Design of Prefabricated ECC/RC Composite Coupled Shear Walls Based on Seismic Energy Dissipation

This study explores an advanced prefabricated composite structure, namely ECC/RC composite shear walls with enhanced seismic performance. This performance enhancement is attributed to the strategic use of engineered cementitious composites (ECC) known for their superior ductility. The study conducts both experimental and numerical simulation analyses to scrutinize the seismic energy absorption capabilities of this innovative structure. Emphasis is placed on critical aspects, such as the optimal deployment areas for ECC within composite coupling beams and shear walls, the grade of ECC strength, the proportion of stirrups in coupling beams, and the caliber of longitudinal reinforcement. Through finite element analysis, this research quantitatively assesses the impact of these variables on seismic energy dissipation, incorporating evaluations of load–displacement hysteretic behaviors and the energy dissipation potential of ECC/RC shear wall samples. The findings suggest the optimal ECC application in the coupling beams, and within a 14% structural height at the base of shear walls. Recommended design parameters include an ECC strength grade of E40 (40 MPa), longitudinal reinforcement of HRB400 (400 MPa), and a stirrup ratio in coupling beams of 0.5%.

Development of Green Engineered Cementitious Composite using Fly Ash and Nanosilica for 3D Printing

The effects of adding Nanosilica (NS) to Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) for 3D Printing (3DP) applications were investigated in this study. The mechanical characteristics of 3DP ECC mortar with different NS contents were investigated. The basic components of the composite included fly ash, M-sand, polypropylene fibers, Ordinary Portland Cement, nanosilica and an accelerator. There were four different mix proportions of NS involving 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.15%, and 0.2%. After 3, 7, 14, and 28 days of curing, the following strengths, viz., pull-out strength, direct tensile strength, compressive strength, and flexural strength were assessed. Addition of NS improved the mechanical properties of ECC up to an ideal level of 0.15%, after which decreasing returns and adverse effects, including agglomeration, were observed. Insights into the ideal NS content for obtaining maximum performance of ECC obtained from the study provide knowledge for formulations in high-performance 3DP technologies.

The Mechanical and Self-Sensing Properties of Carbon Fiber- and Polypropylene Fiber-Reinforced Engineered Cementitious Composites Utilizing Environmentally Friendly Glass Aggregate

In order to facilitate waste glass recycling and enable the monitoring of concrete structures, this study prepares a new type of self-sensing engineered cementitious composite (ECC) via the use of glass sand instead of silica sand. The health monitoring of a concrete structure is achieved through the addition of polypropylene (PP) fibers to enhance the flexural toughness of concrete, and adding carbon fibers (CFs) to make the concrete self aware, enabling it to sense the load changes and structural damage. The fiber dosage of ECC is optimized to analyze the effects of different fiber types and dosages on the mechanical and self-sensing properties of concrete. The results show that the hybrid fibers produce a good synergistic effect on mechanical properties, and the presence of excess fibers causes the mechanical properties of concrete to deteriorate. The critical fiber volume fraction required for the strain hardening of PP ranges from 0.75% vol to 1% vol. At different PP dosages, the CF dosage shows a positive correlation with the initial crack strength. By analyzing the effect of varied curing times and CF doping on the initial resistivity, it is found that the threshold value of CF conductivity is 0.7% vol. The role of CFs in the flexural sensitivity and pressure sensitivity tests is explained from the perspective of fiber distribution, and the fiber distribution theory is verified with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optimal level of CF doping for flexural sensitivity and pressure sensitivity is determined to be 1.1% vol and 0.7% vol via the use of self-sensing performance tests, respectively. An increase in PP fiber doping leads to a decrease in the initial resistivity and self-sensing properties of the material. The results of this research provide guidance regarding how to determine the optimal fiber dosage flexibly for different engineering works.

The role of supplementary cementitious materials and fiber reinforcements in enhancing the sulfate attack resistance of SCC/ECC composite systems

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of sulfate exposure on the mechanical behavior of fresh-to-fresh composite systems (CS), incorporating self-compacting concrete (SCC) in compression and engineered cementitious composites (ECC) in tension. ECCs were designed based on various supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) such as low and high calcium fly ash, slag and reinforcing fibers such as PVA and steel fibers. Repeated cycles of immersion in concentrated sodium sulfate solution were followed by drying at high temperatures (80 °C). After 90 and 180 days of cyclic exposure, the mechanical properties including flexural, compressive and tensile bond strength and mass change were evaluated. To investigate microstructural deterioration and reaction product concentration, SEM-EDS and backscattered electron imaging were used to examine sulfate profiles at the interfacial zone between SCC and ECC. Composite samples demonstrated excellent physico-mechanical resilience. The incorporation of low calcium fly ash and slag was observed to have a beneficial impact on residual mechanical properties in long-term exposures, along with the de-passivation capacity of the reinforcing fibers. No physical de-bonding was observed in any CS, however phase assemblages revealed high concentrations of reaction products in the SCC layers near the interfacial bond with the ECC layers.
